SCP – Containment Breach is a free and open sourceindiesupernatural horrorvideo game developed by Joonas Rikkonen ('Regalis'). It is based on the paranormal fictional stories of the SCP Foundation website. The game is played in 3D from a first person perspective and the protagonist is a human test subject labeled 'D-9341' in an SCP Foundation facility devoted to containing and researching dangerous creatures called SCPs.[2] The goal of the game is to escape from an underground SCP containment center in the situation of a complete security breach leading to the escape of the contained and dangerous creatures while avoiding security teams sent in to end the breach. The game has a procedurally generated play area created from a random selection of pre-existing rooms and hallways that are strung together to create the facility which is played in. The game features multiple popular SCPs from the SCP Foundation Wiki, such as SCP-096 (nicknamed the 'Shy Guy' and 'The Tall Man' and “the screem man”), SCP-173 (also known as 'The Sculpture' or often called the 'peanut'), and SCP-682 ('Hard-to-destroy Reptile' and (nicknamed“the hostile lizard”)

Gameplay[edit]

The player controls a 'Class-D' personnel in first person, designated D-9341 as he attempts to escape an underground research and containment facility operated by the SCP Foundation amidst a total containment breach of its hazardous anomalies, designated 'SCP's. If the player refuses to leave their cell, they will be terminated by poisonous gases.[3] The player is pursued by numerous hostile SCPs; among them is SCP-173, a concrete statue capable of moving at high speeds when it is not directly observed. SCP-173, along with other SCPs, must be evaded by D-9341 to avoid death, which is made more difficult by the player needing to blink periodically, enabling SCP-173 to attack if it is nearby.[4][5] Certain environments (such as rooms filled with decontamination gas) will cause the player to blink more often. Another one of these SCPs is SCP-096, which will kill the player if its face is viewed, but otherwise will remain docile.[6]

One of the game's primary features is randomly generated rooms. All of the rooms in the game are randomly chosen from a set of hallways, chambers, and offices, which are strung together to create the facility. These rooms are divided into three sets: the Light Containment Zone, Heavy Containment Zone, and Entrance Zone. Each set contains a unique set of rooms and hallways that can be randomly generated, as well as its own artifacts and SCPs. Some SCPs, such as SCP-173 and SCP-106, may appear throughout the entire facility.[7] The zones become gradually more difficult as the player progresses; the Heavy Containment Zone possesses more dangerous SCPs than the Light Containment Zone, and the Entrance Zone marks the appearance of 'Nine-Tailed Fox', a squad of elite soldiers deployed by the Foundation to recapture the breached SCPs or destroy the facility by detonating the nuclear bombs situated throughout. These soldiers are armed with FN P90s and will shoot the player on sight. They travel in teams of 3, making them some of the most dangerous enemies encountered in the game.[8]

Along the way, the player can find a wide variety of items to assist them in survival. These include tools such as gas masks, various electronic devices, batteries, and keycards of various levels for operating locked doors. They may also encounter benign or inanimate SCPs; one example is SCP-914, a large clockwork machine that is capable of refining items the player inserts into it into either worse or superior versions based on how its controls are set prior to activation.[9]

SCP – Containment Breach has been fit into multiple other games using its assets, such as the free Steam game SCP: Secret Laboratory and the Roblox version: -=SCP Anomaly Breach=- which two are both known for having multiplayer accessibility.[citation needed]

Plot[edit]

The game revolves around the SCP Foundation, a secretive organization dedicated to containing any anomalous artifacts, entities, and locations that threaten the normality of the world.[10] At some point before the events of the game, several of the Foundation's containment sites are attacked by the Chaos Insurgency, a rogue element of the Foundation, forcing the relocation of many SCPs (the designation given to their contained anomalies) to an unspecified site. A Foundation task force known as The Nine-Tailed Fox is established shortly thereafter to defend this site from any more breaches in containment.[7]

The player takes the role of D-9341, a Class-D test subject (usually inmates on death row, who have been drafted to work for the SCP Foundation)[11] who is forced along with two other test subjects to perform tests on an SCP known as SCP-173, a concrete statue that can move at high speeds and attack by causing cervical fractures at the base of the skull or strangulation when not in the direct line of sight of a person.[12][7][3][13]

During this testing routine, the site's power and door control systems begin to malfunction, allowing SCP-173 to kill the other two test subjects and escape into the ventilation system while, by player control, D-9341 escapes the containment chamber.[7][3] A site-wide broadcast then announces that several SCPs have breached containment, forcing the site to be put under lockdown. The player must then guide D-9341 around the facility while trying to survive many of the escaped SCPs which roam the facility, including SCP-106 (an entity resembling a decaying old man that may travel through matter and which attempts to drag the player into a pocket dimension to kill the player), and SCP-096 (a humanoid creature that will unavoidably chase and kill the player if they view the creature's face, but which is otherwise docile).[3] The player must additionally evade Nine-Tailed Fox soldiers deployed to recapture the SCPs, as they have been ordered to target and kill any stray Class-D personnel. Later in the game, the player encounters SCP-079, a malicious artificial intelligence inhabiting a microcomputer,[14] and learns that it caused the power outage when several Chaos Insurgency spies gave it control over the facility, resulting in the foundation being busy recontaining it. From here SCP-079 will propose that the player reactivates the door control system, allowing SCP-079 to regain control over the doors, in exchange for helping the player escape the facility. If the player re-activates the door control system, SCP-079 will open the doors to two different exits, Gate A and B. From here 4 different endings can be reached.

The first and second endings can be reached by exiting the facility through Gate B. Upon reaching the surface, an alert is sent out stating that SCP-682 (a massive, nearly indestructible, reptilian creature with fast regenerative abilities[15] which the SCP Foundation has attempted to terminate several times[16]) has broken out of the facility near Gate B and that nuclear warheads, kept in the base as a last-measure containment system, will be detonated in an attempt to destroy it. Shortly after, the warheads are detonated, vaporizing the entire area, including D-9341. At the end screen, a radio transmission will be heard as a radio operative requests the deployment of a task force to scout for remains at ground zero. However, the transmission is cut-off mid-sentence as a large roar is heard, indicating that the nuclear blast was unsuccessful in destroying SCP-682. The second ending occurs if the player had disabled the nuclear warheads while they were inside the facility. Another alert is sent out advising all combat personnel to return to Gate B and deal with SCP-682, with a group of soldiers converging on the player's position. The player is thereby killed as the soldiers open fire. A transmission, after SCP-682 is dealt with, from a security chief orders an investigation as to how D-9341 got past Gate B.

The final two endings are accessed through the alternate exit entitled Gate A. The ending that plays out is dependent on whether or not the player re-contained SCP-106 while inside the facility. Should the player have not performed said task, SCP-106 will attempt to break out at Gate A, shortly before the use of a weapon called an H.I.D (High-Intensity Discharge) Turret is authorized to prevent its escape. The turret fires a concentrated beam of light, forcing SCP-106 to retreat due to its sensitivity towards light. While this is occurring, the player passes by the commotion to attempt to escape through a service tunnel, only to be halted by a group of Chaos Insurgency soldiers. The soldiers note that D-9341 'knows too much to let them (the Foundation) get you (D-9341).' The Insurgency takes him away, and his fate is unknown.

Finally, if the player has contained SCP-106, then several task force units will capture D-9341 instead. The end screen plays a recording of a report on D-9341, mentioning his extraordinary luck and ability to overcome any hazardous threats that the containment breach produced; the classification of D-9341 as an SCP subject is also considered.

Production[edit]

The game was created by Finnish developer Joonas Rikkonen.[17] Prior to creating SCP – Containment Breach, Rikkonen had played the game SCP-087 (about a seemingly endless stairwell and a mysterious entity that lurks within) and was impressed at how terrifying the game was given its relatively simple premise. Rikkonen decided to work on his own version, which he released as SCP-087-B; this minigame eventually became so popular that he decided to work on a larger game that included more SCPs. Rikkonen started to design his game in Blitz3D because, in his own words, 'I was too lazy to start learning some other language or engine.'[13] As the game was being designed, Rikkonen decided that the main enemy would be SCP-173 because it was a personal favorite and he also felt that implementing a blink function into the program would make gameplay more interesting.[13]

The game is highly atmospheric, as Rikkonen felt that the best way to create a truly scary game would be to focus on the environment and soundscape, rather than exclusively the monsters. In an interview with Edge magazine, he said:

I think one of the things that makes Containment Breach so scary is that the player is almost never safe, and even the slightest slip can end the game. You have to constantly stay alert for SCP-173, listening for any scraping sounds and carefully looking around when entering a new room. The randomly generated map and randomly placed events are an important part in making CB scary too. No matter how many times you play it, you can never be 100 percent sure what happens next. I’ve also spent a lot of time looking for and making the sounds and music clips for the game. Atmosphere is one of the key elements of a good horror game, and a well made soundscape adds a lot to the atmosphere.[13]

And while Rikkonen found them to be 'a somewhat cheap way of scaring people', he implemented a number of jump scares to 'keep the players on their toes.'[13] He explained, 'When you’re making a game about a creature that charges at you with supernatural speed when you’re not looking at it, you pretty much have to have some jump scares.'[13]

When Rikkonen first started working on the game, he was graduating from upper secondary school. While he enjoyed making games, he had always considered it a mere hobby and a 'pipe dream'. However, after the success of the game Rikkonen decided to pursue game programming at the University of Turku.[18]

Between v1.3 and v1.3.11, a group of independent game developers called Third Subvision Studio assisted Regalis with working on SCP – Containment Breach. Third Subvision also created a mod of the game called SCP - Nine-Tailed Fox, which swaps the player's role for that of one of the Nine-Tailed Fox agents.[19]

Reception[edit]

The game has received generally positive reviews. Gaming website Rock, Paper, Shotgun said 'It's Warehouse 13 without the quips and the quirks but with a lot more panic, screaming and hiding from creatures made of teeth and wire' adding that 'it has a fairly weak model and texture at the moment but hopefully it’ll turn into a massive collaboration'.[4]Edge magazine gave the game a positive review, calling it an 'indie title made in the low-end Blitz3D engine that casts a cheap-looking creature', but adding it 'somehow manages to be scarier than most recent big-budget horror games combined.'[13]Jay Is Games wrote that while the game was 'not perfect and still a little buggy', it nevertheless 'has some serious moments of inarticulate, squealing terror.'[6] Nicholas Greene of GeekInsider wrote positively of the gameplay, specifically applauding the use of the blink timer. Greene also noted that its 'somewhat dated appearance does absolutely nothing to make it less frightening'.[20] The game was featured on PC Gamer's top 50 best free PC games at the number 22 spot, saying that 'Containment Breach's power is doubled by drawing on the SCP mythos: a set of invented (or are they?) internet stories about horrors and monsters locked up by a shadowy organization'.[21] With the release of version 0.8 in late 2013, Ian Birnbaum of PC Gamer once again reiterated the site's praise for the game, calling it 'excellently scary'.[22]

The Foundation maintains and operates a large number of facilities worldwide, from small outposts with only a handful of staff to major Sites with thousands of personnel.

Site

Foundation facilities designated as Sites are covert facilities, meaning that while existence of the facility is known to the public, such facilities are often disguised under government or corporate fronts. Sites are often built in locations in relatively close proximity to civilian populations, where facilities would require such cover.

Area

Foundation facilities designated as Areas are clandestine facilities, meaning that civilians are not aware of their existence at all. Such facilities are often built far away from civilian populations and may contain highly dangerous anomalies; the vast majority of Areas have extreme fail-safe measures such as on-site nuclear warheads.

Sector

Sectors are sections of Sites or Areas that are designated for specific purposes, such as containment, research, or storage. The exact usage of Sectors vary from facility to facility and is dependent on the facility's primary purpose and size.

Unit

Units are self-contained sections of Sites or Areas such as those containing Biological or Dimensional anomalies and are designed to self-seal in case of a breach or other catastrophic event. All personnel entering or exiting a Unit must typically undergo a full decontamination procedure.

These prefixes are often used to denote specializations of facilities or facility sections and are generally only used in internal communication.

Armed

Armed denotes a facility or facility section with abnormally high physical security concerns, either due to containment of violent hostile entities or threat of outside attack. Such facilities typically have a large amount of military-grade weaponry and vehicles as well as a disproportionately large number of permanent security staff; in the case of a full facility, this typically entails a detachment of at least battalion or regiment strength.

Biological (Bio)

Biological containment facilities or facility sections deal with infectious or otherwise biohazardous anomalies and are both isolated and self-contained to prevent the possible escape of such anomalies.

Containment

Containment facilities or facility sections are primarily equipped and intended for the containment of anomalous objects, entities, or phenomena.

Dimensional (Dim)

Dimensional containment facilities or facility sections deal with extradimensional apertures or anomalies exhibiting inconsistent or warped spacetime.

Humanoid

Humanoid containment facilities or facility sections primarily deal with sentient, sapient human or near-human entities capable of understanding and complying with instructions. These are essentially analogous to a prison facility for anomalous entities.

Protected

Protected facilities and facility sections are 'safe zones' kept free of anomalous influence. No anomalies are allowed within these facilities at any time.

Provisional

Provisional facilities are those that are established or built around an immobile anomaly. Provisional facilities typically contain only a single anomaly.

Reliquary

Reliquary facilities or facility sections are designed for handling artifacts and objects of religious or historical significance.

Research

Research facilities or facility sections are designed for either the handling and study of anomalies or anomalous materials or research and development of new containment schemes and methods.

Storage

Storage facilities or facility sections are intended for long-term storage of non-anomalous or inert anomalous objects with no risk of autonomous interaction.

These are Foundation facilities or locations that do not fall under the standard organizational structure.

Observation Posts

Observation Posts are tiny facilities established in a multitude of locations worldwide. Often limited to small standalone buildings or single units within larger buildings, Observation Posts are typically used to monitor regional communications for flagged content, as well as monitor nearby Foundation facilities. Many Observation Posts are also used as secure communications hubs or safe-houses by undercover Foundation agents.

The following is a partial list of notable Foundation facilities. Please note that this list is incomplete; many Foundation facilities are not listed here due to operational security requirements or because their purpose and/or location are classified. Many facility designations have also been recycled over time as the original facilities are decommissioned or otherwise no longer in use.

Sites

01Site-01 (Protected Site-01, Overwatch HQ)

Site-01 is a safe zone that acts as a data backup for all major Foundation facilities worldwide as well as a secure meeting facility for O5 Council members and other high-ranking Foundation personnel. As with all Protected Sites, no anomalies of any kind are allowed in proximity of Site-01. The location of Site-01 is strictly classified.

06Site-06-3 (Humanoid Containment Site-06-3)

Site-06-3 is a containment facility that is currently located in the Lorraine region of France. Formerly located in the United States (Site-06) and Germany (Site-06-2), this facility was moved to its current location following the decommission and demolition of the aforementioned previous facilities. Site-06-3 employs a multi-national staff and houses numerous low-risk human and humanoid entities, most notably several former Foundation personnel. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-069, SCP-706, SCP-1669, SCP-1702

11Site-11

Site-11 is a large-scale Foundation facility located in the mid-western United States consisting of an entire self-sustaining community including residential housing, commercial businesses, and industrial/manufacturing facilities as well as an extensive underground containment and research complex. The Foundation maintains strict tracking of all personnel and civilians within Site-11 and as such, the facility is often used as a safe location for personnel requiring additional security and protection. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-986

15Site-15

Site-15 is a Foundation facility located on the United States west coast that specializes in the containment and study of electric, electronic, and computer-based anomalies. The primary storage and containment wings of Site-15 are electromagnetically isolated to prevent any interaction between anomalous electronics and the outside world. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-079, SCP-719, SCP-896

17Site-17

Site-17 is a major Foundation facility primarily focused on the containment and study of low-risk humanoid entities. As per this focus, Site-17's permanent site staff includes a large number of medical and psychiatric professionals. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-073, SCP-105, SCP-343

19Site-19

Site-19 is the largest Foundation facility currently in operation, housing hundreds of Safe- and Euclid-class anomalies. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-055, SCP-131, SCP-173, SCP-387, SCP-668, SCP-931

23Site-23

Site-23 houses a number of metamorphic or transfiguring biological objects and entities. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-038, SCP-113

Site-28 is located in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City, New York, United States, and was initially established to contain SCP-602. Since then, this facility has been expanded into a full-fledged Foundation containment facility specializing in anomalous artwork and artifacts. Site-38 is a containment site in rural Tennessee, United States, primarily focused on the study of Group of Interest 388-Alpha, 'Alexylva University'. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-961, SCP-1080, SCP-1893, SCP-1082

43Site-43 (Research and Containment Site-43)

Site-43 is situated on the southeastern shore of Lake Huron, one kilometre below sea level in Ipperwash Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. It comprises containment wings for low- to medium-risk anomalies, research divisions arranged in a pseudoacademic structure, and abatement refineries for esoteric substances. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-5056, SCP-5109, SCP-5243, SCP-5382, SCP-5494 and SCP-5520.

45Site-45 (Research Site-45)

Site-45 is a clandestine armed research facility located off the coast of Western Australia under the Indian Ocean. Here, research and temporary containment of anomalous objects are conducted under guard and away from a civilian populace. Site-45 also serves as a staging point for MTF operations within the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Objects located at the facility include: SCP-321, SCP-2401, SCP-466, SCP-127, SCP-2424, and SCP-1577

54Site-54 (Integrated Containment Site-54)

Site-54 is a containment facility located in, around, and beneath the city of Leipzig, Germany. Specialising in the containment of those anomalies deemed 'partially uncontainable', the Site's staff are heavily armed, highly trained, and permanently on edge. Featuring an extensive rapid-response vehicle hangar (with transport both normal and anomalous) and wide array of holding cells, Site-54 is generally considered to be the Foundation site both best-prepared for the worst to happen, and the location at which said worst is most likely to occur. Objects currently under the facility's jurisdiction include: SCP-265, SCP-1911, SCP-2668, SCP-2790, SCP-2856, SCP-3663, and SCP-4856.

56Site-56

Established in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, May 1972, Site-56 was intended to serve as the base of operations for the enactment of the Kraken Protocol within the American Southwest. Over time, Site-56 took on increasing responsibilities, eventually transitioning into a full-fledged containment and administration site; however, recent Overwatch audits suggest its expansion has surpassed its budgetary and logistical limitations, and personnel frequently cite its 'labyrinthine' structure as a detriment to day-to-day operations. Objects contained on-site include SCP-4495 and SCP-5444, with select offsite anomalies such as SCP-5994 falling under its jurisdiction as well.

62Site-62 (Dimensional Site-62)

Formerly Provisional Site-62, this facility was initially built around SCP-004. The facility was eventually expanded to house other objects including SCP-579.

64Site-64 (Storage Site-64)

Located approximately 0.5 km below Forest Park, northwest of Portland, Oregon, Site-64 is primarily a low to medium security storage facility, and is mainly used to house minor anomalous items, and Safe/Euclid class objects confiscated from the anomalous art community and anomalous electronics industry based in Portland and Vancouver. 77Site-77 (Storage Site-77)

One of the Foundation's largest storage facilities, Site-77 was initially built in 1924 in southern Italy and served as an Italian facility until the second World War, when it was damaged by Allied bombing and subsequently destroyed by a containment breach. 81Site-81 (Research and Containment Site-81)

Located beneath Lake Monroe in Bloomington, Indiana, Site-81 is the primary hub for anomalous activity in the United States Midwest. Initially founded as an expeditionary site to monitor SCP-2812, Site-81 has since grown to become one of the largest sites in the region. Located within is the Foundation's Classifications Department, as well as a massive Mobile Task Force deployment outpost. 87Site-87 (Research Site-87)

Site-87 is a research site, established in September 1976 to oversee containment of a minor anomaly in the town of Sloth's Pit, Wisconsin, USA (pop. 17,291 as of 2020). In that same month, researchers discovered that Sloth's Pit was a highly active Nexus, an inhabited zone that has a high concentration of anomalous phenomena. Site-87's civilian front is S & C Plastics, and it possesses its own Task Force— Sigma-10, 'The Sloth's Arm', dedicated to containment of anomalies within city limits. Citizens of Sloth's Pit are considered E-Class Personnel, and have knowledge of the Foundation insofar as 'a research organization is monitoring the town'. The primary goal of Site-87 is to research and catalog anomalies in Sloth's Pit, such as SCP-4040; however, it is also the headquarters of the Department of Multi-Universal Affairs, Nexological Studies, and serves as regional command for the Midwestern United States. 88Site-88 (Humanoid Containment Site-88)

Humanoid Containment Site-88 is located in central Baldwin County, Alabama. The site houses many humanoid SCP objects, along with several high value anomalous items. While research is not a primary focus of the site, the site has the capacity for, and has seen many research projects related to its occupants. 91Site-91 (Xenobiological Research and Containment Site-91)

Established as Provisional Site-91 in 1986 shortly after the discovery of SCP-4612, the site was fully commissioned by Overwatch command the following year. Site-91 was originally adapted from its previous use to contain SCP-4612 (which was found in the substructure below the manor), but was expanded to a full containment facility, research lab and library. The site is located upon the grounds of a manor commonly known as Eckhart House; located in Yorkshire, England. The site's research focus is the containment and analysis of xenobiological specimens, with a secondary focus of the development of thaumaturgical countermeasures and containment of thaumaturgical artifacts. Serves as the primary station for MTF-Beta-777 (“Hecate’s Spear”) due to their familiarity and expertise in thaumaturgical analysis. Objects contained at this facility include: SCP-3743, SCP-4612, SCP-4712, SCP-5079, SCP-5512, and SCP-5612.

Area-02 is a remote facility whose primary purpose is to contain highly dangerous, hostile, or otherwise hazardous anomalies, including multiple Keter-class objects. In addition to a battalion-strength security detachment, Area-02 is also equipped with multiple nuclear fail-safes as a final option in the case of a catastrophic breach or loss of containment. 14Area-14 (Armed Biological Containment Area-14)

Area-14 is a dedicated containment facility located in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada, United States.
